WHERE I'M FROM

Where I’m From

I am from green circus balls and flat screen TV’s

From Peanut Butter Cups, and the Boot and Buckle

I am from the peaceful neighbor where I hear chickadees and finches

from black snakes and grey sharks

and the birch tree in my backyard

I am from always going to my aunts for Christmas and Thanksgiving

from watching scary movies with my family on Saturday night

I am from funny and nice

I am from Therryn and Cheri, Cate and Smith

From eating out at Wendy’s and watching Survivor

I am from “don’t smoke” and “be nice to people”

from the state of Maine, plain tacos with cheese that my mom makes, and marble cake

I am from the cupboard in my bedroom that holds

my soccer, basketball, and baseball trophies

Realistic Fiction and Character Development

Me and my sister, Cate, fight a lot and I pushed her down the stairs and broke her arm. My sister broke both my arms too. But I hit her with my Nerf gun. Ha. Ha. And then she started running at me. Then, she got sent to her room. Score! But I shouldn't be talking because I go to my room a lot. Sometimes we are nice to each other but not all the time. Sometimes I like her. Me and Catlyn have Nerf wars a lot. She is so fast I can't hit her so I take a short cut and hit her and then she starts to cry. When I hit her with my Nerf gun I have had to go to my room. Me and Cate fight a lot so I get grounded a lot.

THE WINTER SOLSTICE

THE WINTER SOLSTICE

The Winter Solstice is the shortest day of the year, December 21st. The ancient people believed that there were evil spirits during the dark days of winter. They would start a fire, and boil water. Then they would put coals from the fire into the water and wash their hands in it. They believed it would keep evil spirits away.

People also celebrated the Winter Solstice by building huge bonfires! They had big feasts and gave presents to their children. They put coins in chocolate pudding for their children to find. Some people tied apples on their tree, and hung mistletoe on their altars where they prayed. They prayed a lot, they wanted the sun to come back really bad.

At the big feasts men were the only ones to eat at the tables. The girls had to make the food. They ate wild pigs that had fruit in their mouths.

Today people put up trees, turn on the lights and enjoy a cup of warm cocoa. They know that the sun isn’t gone, it’s just not rising as high in the sky, which gives us longer nights and shorter days.

A Person who Matters to Me by Connor

A Person Who Matters to Me

I care about my friend Ben. What I like about Ben is that he is funny and he likes hunting, just like me. He likes playing soccer and he likes playing baseball too! Where ever we go people think we look alike so they call us twins. They say “ Are you brothers, cousins, related at all?” Ben has been my friend since we were babies. We went to the same preschool. We have so much fun with each other and we still do. He comes to my house a lot to drive the golf cart. I got the golf cart at my Dad's work, it was only a little bit of money. Every time Ben came over we would ride in the golf cart. It is fun but also very dangerous. At my house there is a curve, and if you turn there fast you could flip over. It is scary, and we have to go very slow.On the dirt road the golf cart can kick up dust. I go to his house and we play video games, like the jet gun game. Sometimes we laugh during the game. Ben loves wrestling and I love it too! Ben is my best friend. I will always be Ben’s best friend forever.
